About The Honeybee Rocket Scientists

The Honeybee Rocket Scientists  are an alternative surf rock indie punk grunge band from Auckland, New Zealand.

Formed in July 2018 by friends Joey Vallis and Jimmy Bonar, their musical influences (amongst others: Nirvana, The Beatles, Soundgarden, Tom Petty,  Jimi Hendrix, Sheryl Crow, Alice in Chains, The Cars, Sonic Youth, Cheap Trick, No FX, Alice Cooper, Joni Mitchell ) have  been bought and synced together in an unusual but original way - that of  both guys alternating on guitar, drums and vocals. This has allowed the group to truly implement  its 'own sound' by showcasing their own personal styles whilst keeping within the confines of a traditional  band concept.

The guys love to make music, and the concept of jamming, creating, writing, collaborating  and performing just comes naturally to them. They’re unashamedly old school when it comes to recording – it’s all done garage style and moulded together and recorded at Jimmy’s flat in Auckland, NZ. He’s lucky to have neighbours who love music!

Variation is their thing and it all works. Joey's hard out guitar playing and mellow drum style is forged together with emotion, passion and intensity. He takes no prisoners with his guitar style and menacing stage presence. This is countered by Jimmy's heart 'n soul approach with a no frills guitar sound coupled with a solid backbeat ala Ringo Starr. He’s an unashamed  Beatles nut.

The guys write their own original material and all songs are credited to Joey Vallis and Jimmy Bonar – to date 29 songs have been written and recorded by the band comprising an EP, 2020’s ‘SURF!’ and two albums, 2021’s ‘CHECK YOURSELF’ and 2023’s ‘VITA est CIRCO’ (Life is a Circus). Almost complete is album # 3 “SURF GREEN’ set for release in April 2025.
