A crater is the physical location where space meets earth - a violent blending of the cosmic and the terrestrial. On their first true studio LP Crater Family, the Modern Folk Trio Band tried to forge a similar union in the matrix of magnetic tape. Recorded deep in a basement, straight to 4-track cassette with minimal overdubs, the sounds here combine the buried roots and arcane, mystical reels of old-time Appalachian music (the Trio is Portland, OR based but all hail from Virginia) with the spaced out wanderings, celestial voyages and layers of out-there sounds from kraut-rock, shoegaze and vintage psychedelia, yielding deep-fried, over-saturated doses of instrumental electric mud. The music flows from groovy to ambient to moments of explosive noise, like comets drifting across the night sky and frothy waterfalls crashing onto smoothed rocks.
