So, what is NEXT...?

This is what I ask myself whenever I begin a new project. Sometimes the answer comes immediately. Other times, the answer takes its own sweet time in arriving. This was an "other time".

I started as I usually do, sifting through ideas Music has given me over the past few years. As I listen, some ideas resonate more than others in the moment and these become my initial roadmap. This roadmap is filled with detours, side streets and journeys off the beaten path. It's up to Music to point me in the right direction. It always does.

Quite often, the places Music leads me in a given project are related in ways that I don't see initially. In this case, all of these pieces are related by the time of year they first arrived (Autumn), though not in the SAME year.

Two pieces are experiments in what I call "bending time". This involves instruments playing together (mostly), but the time signature or downbeat (or both!) of one instrument will shift, creating new and unexpected relationships to each other ("Twister"). In other cases, different instruments will swing in different ways at different times throughout a piece, leading to a pushing-pulling effect ("Thrawn").

Two pieces have strong Ambient leanings; one with drums providing the melodic structure ("Between Now and Silence"), one with the drums patiently waiting to add a pulse ("Goodnight, BC").

"Cruise Control" is the outlier of this record, and a glimpse at where Music is leading me NEXT.
