Orphaned at the age of three Highly resilient Endured the winters spent Alone and hungry Learned to live in the cold Adapt to survive And then I was taken from these streets Into a laboratory They ran tests on me I proved that I was worthy, to bask in glory But, for, what purpose To enter a void of black And feel my mind crack When I leave the surface Flames burst out, I can feel the heat surround Fighting fear, I know that I have left the ground A deafening, thunder-crack, shattering my mind Everything that I knew, I have left behind Far away, severed from the earth I know I fly to space, so they can remain below Violently, I can feel, this chamber pierce the sky Maybe now, in the dark, I will learn the reason why They told me I would be okay Reassured in every way They told me I’d be warm and safe, that this Would be the last time So why am I so terrified Was everything they said a lie? And have they sent me here to die? They said that this would be the last time I bite and tear, try to escape Deep within my rage takes shape How could this be done to me I did all that they asked of me I don’t deserve this cruel fate My loyalty now turns to hate The searing heat, it burns my skin My vision fades, I’m trapped within They say that Laika has returned Burned to ash And smashed to bits inside the Sputnik-2 Smouldering within debris Echoes of her plea Embers of her pain We, who were so loyal to man Finally understand To them we are but tools With beating hearts Never again Will we call you a friend We turn away from you Humanity Flames burst out, I can feel the heat surround Fighting fear, I know that I have left the ground A deafening, thunder-crack, shattering my mind Everything that I knew, I have left behind Far away, severed from the earth I know I fly to space, so they can remain below Violently, I can feel, this chamber pierce the sky Maybe now, in the dark, I will learn the reason why
