The Way It's Meant To Be
The Features
Little fingers, little toes Little tempers that come and go It's the little things that matter most Like the monograms on your clothes Gonna stand right by your side Wipe your nose and dry your eyes Zip your dress and tie your shoes There's nothing I won't do Gonna love you 'til I die 'Cause I'm yours and you are mine And that's the way it's meant to be Oh, call a doctor, call a king Someone should witness all the joy that you bring Oh, my love, you're such a beautiful sight Just wanna hold you and squeeze you tight Gonna take you by the hand Try to make you understand Take you everywhere i go Teach you everything i know We can laugh until we cry 'Cause I’m yours and you are mine And that's the way it's meant to be One happy accident, two little rays of light Long as you're with me Everything is allllllright Gonna tuck you in tonight Fall asleep right by your side Take a swift kick in the head Let you push me out of bed Steal the cover, I don't mind 'Cause i'm yours and you are mine And that's the way it's meant to be And that's the way it's meant to be

Were you surprised to find the world outside? I felt so sorry for your little head Was it depressing to just lay in bed? Oh, what a pity Oh, what a shame Me & the skirts always turn out the same A little bit angry Oh, a little bit tame Me & the skirts always end up the same Oh, what a pity Oh, what a shame Me & the skirts always turn out the same A little bit angry Oh, a little bit tame Me & the skirts always end up the same (Oh, what a pity) Oh, what a pity (Oh, what a shame) Oh, what a shame (Me & the skirts always turn out the same) Always turn out the same (A little bit angry) (A little bit tame) Me & the skirts always end up the same

Leave It All Behind
The Features
I've been thinking about the trouble We've got troubles, that's not easy to hide It's just a minor complication In relation to the natural kind I think it's time to get away from here, away from here Leave all our troubles far behind Move to the country where the coast is clear, the coast is clear Someplace the sun will always shine And we'll be on our way In your arms to stay Leave it all behind There's no need to second guess When our love's put to the test we will find It's just a minor complication In relation to the natural kind I think it's time to get away from here, away from here Leave all our troubles far behind Head to the country where the coast is clear, the coast is clear Someplace the sun will always shine And, we'll be on our way In your arms to stay Leave it all behind And, we'll be on our way In your arms I'll stay We'll be on our way Leave it all behind

Exorcising Demons
The Features
I'm staying with a friend of mine 'Cause at home the tension's running high Even though we both agree This is for the best, maybe we're wrong I'm sorry 'bout the dirty clothes And all the dishes in the sink I think I need some time alone I just need time to sit and think There's something good in everything Even though it kind of stings I'm exorcising demons from my life Oh, demons be gone Leave me alone tonight Oh, tonight Don't come around here any more I don't wanna see you at my door I can hear you haunting me That much is plain, just let me be There's something good in everything Even though it kind of stings I'm exorcising demons from my life Oh, demons be gone Leave me alone tonight Oh, tonight Oh, demons be gone Leave me alone tonight Oh, tonight

Harder To Ignore
The Features
You might think I'm crazy You might even think I'm out of my mind Oh, my knees are shakin' And my heart is achin' all of the time One thing's for certain One thing's for sure This feeling's stronger than it's ever been before It's getting harder to ignore Harder to... I can't help that I'm dependent And I want you here with all of my might Oh, temptation's calling I can hear it from my window tonight I'm not for certain I'm not for sure But I think your pants are tighter than they were the day before It's getting harder to ignore Harder to ignore It's getting harder to ignore Harder to... I used to think I understood The difference between bad and good That's before I ever knew Someone could love me like you would So what's the trouble you might ask Cloudy days are in the past I'd like to think there's truth in that But sunny days, they never last It's getting harder to ignore Harder to ignore It's getting harder to ignore It's getting harder to ignore

The Features formed in the small town of Sparta, TN in the mid-90s. By the time they got to Sweet Tea studio in Oxford, MS in 2003 they had experienced lineup changes, recorded two full-length albums that had never been released and had amassed a litany of demos that deserved a proper home. The upside to their tribulations was that they’d also garnered a passionate fan base and refined their songwriting into a uniquely contagious combination of rock, pop, and indie influences. At the time, they were cast as “a head-on collision between Ray Davies and Elvis Costello with the Elephant 6 Collective picking up the pieces and putting them back together in the American South.”*

After eight years as a band, the foursome of bassist Roger Dabbs, keyboardist Parrish Yaw, drummer Rollum Haas and guitarist / vocalist Matt Pelham found themselves signed to Universal Records off the success of their latest EP, The Beginning. With a batch of more-than-promising demos in hand, they headed to Sweet Tea with producers Mike McCarthy and Craig Krampf. Over the course of a month (May 2003) they captured 17-songs that would make up their major label debut, aptly titled Exhibit A. The recordings were fiery and bursting with urgency while still maintaining the band’s relentless ability to deliver a memorable hook.

McCarthy’s recording process captured the album on Ampex ½” tape, an analog format that resulted in a sound that is warm and lively. He mixed the record with the band and they delivered the album to Universal, ready to go. However, the finalized album was not quite as finalized as they hoped. As any large label is want to do, changes and tweaks were requested in an attempt to ensure the album’s success in reaching the widest audience. Overdub recordings were done, an additional mix was performed by David Thoener and a new final master from George Marino at Sterling Sound buttoned it up. The Exhibit A that was released in 2004 was the result of a collaborative process between the producers, the band and the mechanisms of Universal Records.

The recordings herein are the original sonic vision of The Features and Mike McCarthy. Nothing about the changes enacted by Universal were poor choices or degrading to the album but to celebrate two decades of the band's debut, these recordings are the Exhibit A album as originally envisioned. Sourced from the original mixes by Mike McCarthy and remastered by John Baldwin at Infrasonic Sound, this Exhibit A is as close to that sonic palette as can be. Here you’ll find all of the album tracks and b-sides from the Sweet Tea sessions, as well as a sampling of the demos recorded with longtime friends Brian Carter, Mike Poole and producer Craig Krampf.

We proudly present the Sweet Tea Recordings in full as thank you to everyone that supported Exhibit A and The Features over the years.
