Forging the Guardian
Fenmoss
Long ago, the clan Ukash of the Herjaz dwelt beneath these lands. Deep below their mountain, there bubbled a series of thermal springs, for which they named their city Azárukash, “warm waters.” In their day, the Ukash were masters over a land that stretched a week's ride both east and west along the Dusk River, and all who traded with them prospered. Within their underground halls, the Ukash produced masterful works of smithcraft and artifice, as dwarves are wont to do. Some of their handiworks indeed still survive in the surface lands to which they were traded, even now some three millennia hence. Perhaps the greatest of all the works of the Ukash were their guardian automata. Wrought in the shape of a dwarf, yet more than twice the height of the tallest of Donnic men, these living statues of bronze were built to guard the outer caverns surrounding Azárukash. In this role, they tirelessly wandered the darkened passages beneath the hills and fens for centuries unending.

Volume II of the Fenmosian Tales series was, like its predecessor Permungus' Tales, born from a challenge. This past month, as part of Melkor's DS Dungeon's "Dungeon Shamble," your humble guide took a leisurely stroll through the darkened passages of synth and found within well-worn tale of the local erudite-of-note. Kebret Aksel is his name, and wondrous discoveries are his most dedicated work.

Reawakened Wisdom sees wise Kebret delving into the faintly sunlit caverns which were once the side entrance to the lost Herjazic city of Lúrúkzâm.Within such a vacant, yet not lifeless place, Kebret discovers the slumbering bronzen remains of an ancient guardian construct. This metal being has waited here for centuries after the demise of the place it once protected. It has grown old, worn, and forgotten in the time since it was discarded, yet wise Kebret sees only the opportunity to resurrect the guardian.

In the Fenmoss-town of today, some two-and-fifty years later, the local fyrd are aided in their patrols of the walls and lanes by the mighty forms of three of such guardians. The original, however, is not seen in the daylight, but instead dwells in a restful cellar of Kebret's tower on the southeastern edge of town, near the River Gate where the Oakwash empties into Fenmoss harbor. If a being of cold bronze can be happy, one suspects it must be, now revived from lost centuries of tireless vigil.

Come along and join Kebret on his journey, feel and taste the dank humours of lost caverns, and bask in the sunlight of rediscovered wisdoms of yesteryear, if you dare...
