A mix of dark electronica, western gothic, and doom metal dirge. The song evokes a desolate landscape, scoured by searing winds, seemingly rendered lifeless… but with a ray of hope, a flash of green and bronze…
The term “barrens” has been used to malign wild places with low crop potential. In reality, barrens can be diverse habitats full of unique life. This song turns the negative connotation of barrens around. It’s not wild places that are barren. The places most devoid of life are those of human creation where we’ve deliberately excluded other species. There is a note of hopefulness toward the end of the song, reflecting the trend towards restoring ecologically complex habitats in cities and formerly agricultural lands.
