All the Other Roses but Mine 02:43 Oh, my darling saves the petals that fall Off of all the other roses but mine Perfume trickles through the cracks in the wall And the mockingbirds make nests in the vines The sun sinks, the jasmine sighs We’re waiting for a fire to ignite Oh, her garden grows to cover us all And the lightning leaves a hole in the sky The moon sings, the jasmine unwinds We’re waiting for the stars to align Oh, my darling starts a fire where she falls And our shadows pirouette round the light 2. Enemy 03:00 Then he said paint it red Toss a coin in the sea Cross your heart till it bleeds Hope to die, tell a lie When they ask about me It’s just the shiver in the leaves Then watch the branches sway As the day starts to die And the light fades away Then he said keep your head Don’t believe what you see Things are not as they seem There’s an eye in the sky And it follows me I’m the secret that you keep I’m the enemy Then he said nothing’s left Nothing matters to me All the world on a string Close your eyes, I decide What you’re going to see I’m not the forest, I’m the trees Watch the branches sway As the day starts to die And the light fades away

This album is composed mostly of samples culled from slowed-down cassette tapes. Mostly, those samples were chopped up, sped up, stretched out, slowed down, pitched this way and that, and processed to create a murky kind of in-between, a shaky liminal space. The project was sparked by Dogbotic's Cassette Hacking class, not only because it taught me to slow down a cassette player's motor, but because they sent me two tapes to hack with: Fun Rock, a compilation of rock songs that are fun, and Wilson Phillips' self-titled album. I dug some more material out of a homemade mixtape labeled "Random Access Memories III," which I discovered at my local record store.
