Wood is back with his first single in over 3 years, You, Me, the Reign is a song about wishing you could exist in a perfect bubble with your partner when the outside world gets too chaotic. He started writing this song in early 2024, but after the election it really came into focus. “Hence the lyrics, I’d build a fortress around us, just to protect this.”
This song is dancey and infectious by design. The chorus “ooohs” feel like protest chants but also a rousing anthem inviting you to sing along. You, Me, the Reign attempts to borrow political momentum from a mix of genres, such as disco, funk, and rock to bring you to safety, community, and freedom.
Eze Jackson raps on this song about a girl named Lorraine, who was something of a mythical Cassandra. She could sense when bad things were about to happen but everyone else thought she was too radical or paranoid.
There is no more fitting day to release this song than July 4th. It’s a day designated to celebrate America, but in my own circles, it’s a day meant to live out a micro summer vacation with friends, agnostic of any patriotic meaning. My hope is that this is a song you can put on while floating in a lazy river, or partying at a backyard barbecue. Ultimately it’s meant to capture community or solidarity in whichever way that makes sense to you.
