Nave Relic is an experimental sound project exploring the hidden acoustic and material voices of rural parish churches.

Working within historic churches across the local countryside, the project captures the natural ambience of these ancient spaces and transforms it into immersive, evolving drone compositions. Rather than introducing external instruments, Nave Relic treats the building itself as the instrument.

Using contact microphones attached to weathered doors, timber naves, stone pillars and centuries-old grave markers, subtle physical interactions—tapping, rubbing and resonating with these surfaces—are amplified and manipulated in real time. The resulting sounds are layered with the natural reverberation of the church, creating vast, meditative soundscapes that blur the line between architecture, memory and music.

Each performance is unique to its location, revealing the distinct sonic character of buildings shaped by centuries of history, decay and worship. Nave Relic is both an act of listening and of collaboration with these sacred spaces, uncovering voices that have always existed, waiting to be heard.
