Notes on March

When I was in elementary school, the library had a series of biographies on the great composers. Beethoven, Mozart, Hayden, Brahms, Chopin, Mendelssohn... I read them all. Multiple times. I was inspired by each of their stories, by the way each drove toward mastering their craft in different ways. Those stories resonated with me. They seemed familiar.

While I chose to pursue music that is clearly different from the music of the great composers, my drive to master my craft is similar to theirs. And in pursuit of that goal I will gladly walk down any path Music leads me.

When I sat down on March 13, 2022 to improvise an "exercise in patience" in the hope of bringing more patience to my music making I had no idea that a piece would emerge that was the realization of things I'd heard in my head for years and wished to explore. It was a profound moment for me.

My view that all music is one, not separated by styles, has been commented upon by various musicians I've worked with over the years. These pieces reflect that part of my musical development that I haven't worn obviously but has always been there; bubbling under the surface and manifesting itself in whatever music I was making at the moment.

I hope you enjoy what Music gave me over those 11 days in March.
