This is a long form generative piece of modular synthesiser music based around two Krell patches. The music was spontaneously composed and performed by the machine without any intervention from me, at least not once the patch was set in motion. At the core of the system are four function generators (or cycling envelopes) fed by various random voltage sources which determine the attack and release times of the envelopes, the rhythmic patterns, the note values and the probability of a note sounding or not. The sounds are further treated with low pass, band pass and high pass filters, additional envelopes, delays, reverberation and noise. And they never repeat.

I've sat for hours listening to the machine and it does something uncannily pleasant to my brainwaves; even when the tones are abrasive it seems to act on me in a positive way. I had a head injury in a car crash a few years back, I don't know if my brain likes these sounds in the same way it now likes visual fractals, particularly animated ones, simultaneously exciting and soothing the neurons — perhaps like brushing velvet the right way — or whether I just like them for themselves.

Either way, with this in mind, I decided to make a recording to share with others on Bandcamp, with all proceeds going to Headway, a UK charity doing vital and important work for people living life after brain injury.

Hope you get something from it too.
