I made a totem it was staring ‘cross the table at me I was so proud i gave a name to it and took it to sleep And no one had one like you And no one seemed to care One day I woke up and the totem it had a big scar And so I went and bought another with my shiny blue card I stood in line and saw a thousand other people like me Running with totems in their hand in black and silver and green From totem trophy then to trinket you lost your meaning I had the first one like you, little totem And no one seemed to care Another sad, sad totem, on its way out Another sad, sad trinket, lingering around -- Counterpoint in wings Dancing in the light Cut by dark Punctuated by the rings Ring ring Vibrations Metal drops Interrupted by spotlight Glaring now Cutting Counterpoint: we’re dancing in the light Strings plucked Basement bass vibrating through the anxiety Spectrum on the wall The strings slow it down Bring me back They’re puppeteering the calm Slowly rock Wave in the current beat Warm lights Dark contrast Smooth waves washing Puppeteering the calm Quiet mind Be still Counterpoint: we’re dancing in the light

RUINED CASTLE, the third Kid Lightbulbs album, is a reflection on suffering.

Composed in parts over the prior 16 years, RUINED CASTLE presents another perspective from Kid Lightbulbs' other albums: while the protagonist of THROW MYSELF and STEP INTO THE OCEAN grows through difficult experiences, this album chronicles the despair and neglect of that person's partner as they struggle with their own issues. The titular castle is a metaphor for the state of one's life and shelter after a long period of despair and neglect. One may feel their life slowly fall away from them, and the only way to rebuild is for someone to come in, truly empathize, and help.

Drawing from a wide array of influences including indietronica ("hope inside my baby's heart", "when i sleep"), piano rock ("i made a totem"), industrial ("don't wait") and even experimental electroacoustic music ("inside the castle"), and with infectious bass lines throughout, RUINED CASTLE takes the listener on a slow and tortured journey to acceptance of one's suffering and, possibly, healing.
