Spiraling
Che Arthur
Come down and try to get saved by the end of the light I fear clouds of illusion are choking your life With a religion - that burns the helpless Head too small for the crown Here’s your fire in the clouds - it’s about to come down How many times can we stare out over the edge? And how many nights can we sing empty prayers to our dead? Keeping time in the slight, And the ones who were once at your side steal your breath in the night There is blood on the leaves, hanging down from the trees And we’re straining to breathe but we’re spiraling out Desperate airs on the days when the barriers fail They are under the thumb, still blind to the one on the scale Where the air grows thin And still we debate here that nature is drawing them in Cannot shake this faith so deep They’re betraying those penitent sheep Tune the crisis out, can’t you see we are spiraling down?

Obsidian
Che Arthur
You’re crying out, the knife is so cold you’re burning everything you own The dying light of life in free fall You’re spending every year alone - in starless skies of pure obsidian They talk it out, their voices echo They’re still the only ones you know While the simple things you’ve asked, they’ve chained you to your past the sunset is recast in blackened skies and in your eyes of pure obsidian Never formed those words and no one else could dream that i was in between and i could not be seen through pure obsidian

Light Goes Out
Che Arthur
I’m sleeping in the ground like every other lost heart We rise and fall, active imagination When you win this round, one clean revision Come crashing down - your new obsession took you out With all these histories blown a-part Where your riches bought you nothing you’ve got the artifice but dropped the art Lives changed in the blink of an eye Careless consideration in a world that passed you by The planets in my eyes, the precious silence of Wordless replies, they were the old ward, lost and found Changing their clothes in the violence that swelled underground The incoming tide now It’s carrying ships aground The knives in our backs played this out The dark that was following This nocturnal drought Who holds the flame when the light goes out And with our hands down, the light goes out In the trail of sulfur you sink back to the cave As it echoes back to the affection you crave When you let your guard down to watch the coal black clouds with your eyes crossed out Lives changed in the blink of an eye - wordless replies Careless consideration in a world that passed you by

Anchor
Che Arthur
Now you feel the infinite has gone But you have not rightfully moved on Whether all the maps come undrawn Pulling the anchor with hands you fold Wearing your anger like bands of gold (it never fit the same) and How did it feel without self-control? Call on a stranger to share the sole secret that you hold We are bodies made from stardust Barely leave a trace hung in the air Never tell a soul you lived there Pulling the anchor with hands you fold Wearing your anger like bands of gold (it never fit the same) and How did it feel without self-control? Call on a stranger at sundown We’re at sundown Cover your eyes all night - we’re at sundown Now that you’ve seen the light, we’re at sundown Where the fight bled offsite, we’re at sundown Where you can see in the dark tonight

Exiles
Che Arthur
Standing at the edge of impermanence Forever finding out what could have been Never caught a word that bears explaining Stare into the dark and shiver Never could hold off deliverance but you Never found a thing you felt this draining All you wanted was a pure immersion All you had was in the wind and wavering When you fell you found a long lost sight for sunken eye Every word that closed an avenue Said it all through cracked and broken tooth Living every lie that fucked you daily Can you bear more suffering? All this work is painstaking Breathing in anemic air Grasping straws that held you there But you can’t name this pain It holds you down again Speaking through your turn Words you can’t relearn They fed you through the burn

Sever
Che Arthur
If I change my face Will it still seem best I stay away While i wait outside for brighter days If I fall out of deep space It’s the hardest memory to erase But i could use help cutting to the chase Every night here the distance grows Well it’s karmic i suppose Razor edge that is slicing us in two Are we here til the weather passes I’m huddled under leaves til it’s over I didn’t want to leave but it’s over Lives swinging in the breeze until it’s over Time severed at the knees until it’s over Am I back from someplace I could fall back to your atmosphere Heal me just in case I can help you find a future Or did that seem off base? Have I let my feet shrink from my shoes As they now unlace and I tape them back together There’s a cloud on the airwave So we never catch the news And we never know what else to do we’re just here until the weather passes

7 Gravel and Thorn
Che Arthur
This constant yearning They built castles of glass on the ocean floor With the seaside burning Walked the gravel that led them up to your door They brought all you could stand and they still had more Now that you’ve gone so far Talking in circles Your heart has grown so cold This silent prison is just a thorn in your side Every violent mission became a source of your pride Where the home fires died When did it break your stride Now that you’ve gone so far Talking in circles Your heart has grown so cold Knee deep concrete Indiscreet but it’s all you leave behind Treading water Selling favors Manufactured saviors on the vines Just hanging on to the tie that blinds That earthbound phoenix never rose Saddled with the armament you chose Stood by all night but missed the call Now you wash it out with ethanol Now that you’ve drawn blood, you’re on your own

Vacant
Che Arthur
Cut the umbilical, make the incision You wished on bedrock without your x-ray vision It’s gone like all of you Now that the power’s down you live by match light Plowing bushes in the back five But you forgot to leave a soundbite It took the best of all of you This ancient architecture cut you down to size Where old affiliations wear a new disguise They’ll build a second nation if the creek don’t rise Then leave it vacant, you can see it in their eyes tonight Now they’re in prime time Walked out to the rite of spring With dirty mouthfuls, there’s another way to learn to sing They’re blind like all of you That parade of cynicism now sets the stage This is your catechism, but you can’t get saved You think you won this one, just wait until i tell you This ancient architecture cut you down to size Where old affiliations wear a new disguise They’ll build a second nation if the creek don’t rise Then leave it vacant, you can see it in their eyes This is a rotted culture, retelevised They made a killing on you, you believed their cries Now at a distance we see where the fracture lies They’re crimson vultures you can see it in their eyes tonight

The Fates
Che Arthur
Have you seen the keys to my heart Fireflies circle around my vision Come and watch the stars drop down Touching ground is their new ambition Where emotion needs response But the walk slows to a crawl There are fissures in the halls And a destiny that can’t be changed Can’t be changed (there’s a chemical error) Can’t be changed (now the reign is terror) Can’t be changed (now the way grows slender) Where we swept the embers Describe this present moment as the start of your slide Where the lesson of the motion is when you die inside Staring at the overpass to calculate the distance All who know this pain know that the path of no resistance Can’t be changed If i write another verse and try it out on you Will I sing to save myself, when the song is violent blue I can’t write this down, and cannot sound it out The only song left of the life I learn to live without That can’t be changed Can’t be changed (there’s a chemical error) Can’t be changed (now the reign is terror) Can’t be changed (now the way grows slender) Where we swept the embers All that we remember can’t be changed

Erode
Che Arthur
Your baseless energy Your grace left in a dream Now you feel immortal And now the time is right You felt the yard ignite Hands around the portal This opportunity When they pull you from the fire You’re feeling nervous You’re faceless in a crowd Dragged across the wire Burning under surface Where you catch a star Dancing where you sink Pulling out of chokeholds Everywhere you are Everyone sees the trick But you left them stone cold Now you can’t escape Another burn and break You’re out the trap door Now you feel the weight And we know the score Sinking through the ground floor Erode - you’re wrong

Describe This Present Moment is Che Arthur's fifth album under his own name. In ten songs the Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist/songwriter/engineer/producer pits the taut, concise punk/indie structures and contemplative acoustic-based textures of his previous albums against heavier moments that call back to Pink Avalanche, the currently "on hiatus" band Arthur helmed from 2010-2020. Moment sees Arthur expand upon his cathartic, darkly melodic post-hardcore work in Pink Avalanche, his previous solo work and as guitarist in regarded early 2000s Chicago quartet Atombombpocketknife.
