About Dathon
Formerly known for crafting electronic beats under the alias OAO-3 and contributing to the hardcore scenes with bands like Bodyhammer and Millions, Lyons has redefined their sonic identity with Dathon. In addition to their solo work, Lyons also plays guitar in free jazz and noise bands in Chicago, including Galaxxu, BGK, and Obsequies.
Dathon's sound emerges from a diverse array of sources — distorted lofi sounds, FM synthesis, homemade instruments, ethereal clips extracted from old 78 records, and microscopic, peculiar sounds captured through high-sensitivity microphones. The music becomes a vessel for contemplation, an exploration of the present moment and letting the sounds wash over the listener. Much like a David Lynch film, Dathon's music possesses a dreamy quality, best experienced rather than dissected, transcending traditional structures to encourage active listening.
A distinctive feature of Dathon's improvisations is the deliberate departure from tension and release dynamics, creating an immersive experience that spans the realms of sleep-inducing meditative spaces to otherworldly soundscapes reminiscent of alien worlds. Lyons infuses an element of chance and randomness into their pieces, treating the machines as fellow improvisers to which he responds and reacts in real-time.
