Ascent
The Demographic
The pilot’s light has gone out He watches from the wing He sets the course and does the math And subtracts everything Sitting still as a spinning top He flips a switch, the pressure drops He holds the cans up to his ears And cannot hear a sound Forty thousand feet tall The pilot banks, withdraws it all A canopy of broken glass A slow exhale to make it last Buttoned up we chase the day A ghost haunts the heads-up display Let it go, let it go Upon it’s merry way Nothing to fix Nothing to do No way to calculate the things that we might lose Nothing to fix Nothing to do No way to calculate the sum of me and you

Ruins
The Demographic
I built a cathedral just to watch it fall apart Forgotten & buried and folded in to my heart A brick, a bone, a cup, a grave among the trees And there in the ruins I sunk into the leaves I guess that There is nothing more for me to tell The four, the three, the two, and well I can't seem to find the one There is nothing left undone It's all plowed under now, erased from all the maps I'll hold these remnants close, a record of collapse A ghost, a footprint, a foundation, an outline And here in the ruins I draw a new design I guess that There is nothing more for me to tell The four, the three, the two, and well I can't seem to find the one There is nothing left undone No more for me to tell The four, the three, the two, oh well I can't seem to find the way It will fade away I watched it all decay away

Hole In The Sea
The Demographic
I see a hole out in the sea I see a hole out in the sea The tide is turning away from thee An undertow of our debris I see a hole now I see a holdout I see no hope in tragedy The waves are breaking everything they see A tumbling cacophony The whales are singing catastrophe You dug that hole right in the sea The abyss calls upon the wicked A reckoning of their misdeeds There is no penance for this trespass Sink to the bottom on their knees

Break Your Heart
The Demographic
If I stay up here all night / play it fast and loose and right We might see tomorrow I’ll look you right into your eyes / sing a chorus full of lies Don’t bother with the future Just give me one more day / I’ll make it all okay Let the last note decay / and let it ring til morning Just give me one more night / I’ll get my own words right who knows I just might / have something to say I just want to break your heart I just want to bend your ear I just want to tell you something that I think you would like to hear I just want to break your heart I just want to bend your ear I just want to tell you something that I think you would like to hear If we stay up here all night play it fast and loose and right We might see tomorrow I’ll look right into your eyes sing a chorus full of lies we might live forever I just want to get this right I hope it doesn’t come out wrong If you think you know the words then you can try to sing along Let me tell you something Let me tell you something Let me tell you something I got a heart of gold

Everybody Leave
The Demographic
There is a place where they won’t see you They’ll see just what they want They’ll hear everything / & miss every other word There is a place where they won’t hear you Cos they have so much to say They’ll see everything / But everything is blurred Everybody stand / everybody breathe Stare at the floor / everybody leave There is a place where they won't feel you But they'll touch you anyway They'll get real close & push you out the door There is a place where they don't want you But they need you anyway They'll chip at you / Until they hit the core Everybody stand, everybody breathe Stare at the floor, everybody leave Everybody stand, everybody breathe Stare at the floor, everybody leave Every body, Every body, Every body, Every body Every body, Every body Everybody leave Everybody leave Everybody leave

Clear Them Decks
The Demographic
Clear them decks, boys Stow that bullshit out of sight Coffee cans full of spoons and knives Throw 'em down the stairs all night I don't want to hear it Set sail, set sail, Set sail, set sail Clear them decks, ladies Chip the layers of paint away Get down to bare iron So we can hear / the words you meant to say Then we'll know, and then we'll go Set sail, set sail, Set sail, set sail Keep your mouth open as you wind and twist off course Keep your eyes shut Mutiny and take the bridge by force Lash yourself to the mast with a complicated knot You'll sink straight to the bottom with all the shit you got I hear a bell, I hear a bell It's pure and clear & loud as hell I hear a bell, I hear a bell It's pure and clear & loud as hell I hear a bell, I hear a bell It's pure and clear & loud as hell Clear them decks & clear em well I hear a bell, I hear a bell I hear a bell, I hear a bell I hear a bell, I hear a bell

Deepest, Darkest
The Demographic
When I walk the ocean floor I will look for something more I will seek treasure to keep I will search for something deep As I drop into the black Unconcerned with getting back I will spend a month down there I will breathe the ocean air We’ll go down, down, down, down, down, down, down Sitting on the ocean floor I will shake hands with myself I will pull him close to me Share the air and let us breathe I will take him to the sun I will treat him like a son We will rest there on the shore Then we’ll search for something more We’ll go down, down, down, down, down to these lonely places you ain’t been around

Descent
The Demographic
We’ve been breaking up since we first met Spinning orbit, flying blind I don't think that we're in trouble yet Navigation is offline We’ve been breaking up since we first met Here’s a tie that might not hold I don't think that we are broken yet Feeling sure I'm feeling old I’ve been up and down a thousand times I have swallowed my regret I can’t feel your hand holding mine I’ve been breaking up since we last met We're breaking up again

Sad Satan
The Demographic
Oh here's to my sweet Satan The one whose little path would make me sad whose power is Satan He will give those with him 666 There was a little tool shed where he made us suffer, sad Satan There was a little tool shed where he made us suffer, sad Satan Turn me on dead man
2:29
Wolves
The Demographic
Well here’s a prayer I made Some kind of word parade I finally wrote it down buried it underground Where the ink won’t fade Here’s a prayer I earned before the screws were turned We redact as we act and then we mount an attack On everything we’ve learned Here’s a prayer I wrote a promissory note Put a page to the flames Take the ash that remains And push it down my throat Here’s a prayer I found grabbed it off the ground A meditative debt a novel of regret And so I put it down A message of intent a holy place we went So we could burn it down A palace built of hope and fear Turns to pulp out in the rain A corner of a notebook page Stuck to the bottom of my shoe

“More bombastic fun from this duo from Northampton, MA – both a full-length and an EP!”

— John MacLeod, Comic Rawk Top 21 Albums of 2021

Hiatus (2021) was recorded and mixed in Easthampton, Massachusetts by Grant Wicks at Uncanny Audio — mostly in 2019, with sporadic overdub and mixing sessions before/during the pandemic. We brought aboard bass powerhouse Marc Seedorf (Mark Mulcahy sideman, engineer, Dinosaur Jr. guitar tech, and a woodworker t’boot) to turn us into a trio. Whoa!

Hiatus covers a lot of territory, shifting from the mountain-crushing “Wolves” to the rusty coffee can filled with spoons that is “Hole In The Sea,” from the Bob Mouldiness of “Descent” to the Nirvanishness of “Everybody Leave,” from the wicked evil “Sad Satan” to the storm-battered coast of “Clear Them Decks.”

Credits
